Dragon Boat Festival

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Here’s a fun time to be had by all! I’m a little bit biased though being Asian and having gone to this festival for the past 10 years. If you’re not busy between the hours of 12 and 5 this coming Sunday, June 10th and happen to be in the Harvard Square area, come on down to the Charles River (near the Harvard Footbridge), where the annual Dragon Boat Festival is being held.

The race itself happens on the Charles River as dragon boat teams from all around the country and from other countries compete. It’s more of a time-honored tradition than a hardcore sports competition. At the same time that this is happening, a large tented stage area showcases different talents to entertain the crowd. There will be dragon and lion dancing, Japanese taiko drumming, Philippine dancing and a traditional Chinese kung fu performance by the Wah Lum Kung Fu Athletic Association, so there’s something sure to please everyone! Here’s a schedule of the exact performance times. There will be an arts and crafts tent as well for the kiddies where they can learn origami and Chinese face painting. If you have a hankering for fresh squeezed lemonade, beef satay and chicken korma, no need to wander back into Central Square as food vendors will be out all alongside the tents as well. Don’t miss out!

Asian Appreciation Night

Friday, June 8th, 2007

If you’re looking for something fun to do tonight, here’s what my buddy from Asian Boston Magazine announced:

Hi Everyone!

The Fashion Café’ is holding an Asian Appreciation Night this Friday,
June 8th at Peking Tom’s!

DJ spinning R&B, Hip Hop and Int House

Doors open at 11, 21+ / proper dress

*ONLY $5 dollar cover before midnight!

Peking Tom’s
25 Kingston St
617.482.6282
Boston

**VALIDATED PARKING AT THE HYATT Regency Hotel.

Peking Tom’s is located near Downtown Crossing, across the street from
JJ Foley’s & the Good Life.

I hope to see you there!

Now, I’ve been to Peking Tom’s. When I want hardcore, real Chinese food, I just go into Chinatown which is only 2 steps away. However, Peking Tom’s does have excellent nouveau Asian cuisine and cocktails to match. They put the twist on some your old favorites…the mai tai, the zombie, the massive scorpion bowl and my favorite, the Mary Ann & Ginger. If you have a big party, take advantage of their family style dinner special where, depending on the number of people, you can pick out 2-4 appetizers and 4-6 entrees and share it all, for $25 per person. I’ve taken 8 starving martial artists after a hard workout here and there was STILL food left. Geez…now I’m hungry and all I have is cold wonton soup in the fridge!

So, get there early to enjoy some dinner, lounge about with your cocktails and then dance till the wee hours of the morning…or until 2:00 a.m. when they kick you out.

Summertime is Barbecue Time

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

There’s something magical that happens this time of year in Boston. Once we dig ourselves out from our snow and ice covered hibernation and realize that it’s finally warm and STAYING warm, we just go crazy. It first starts off when we’re listening to NPR and we hear for the first time “40 degrees tomorrow.” Sure enough, tomorrow there will be guys walking around in shorts and T-shirts already. Now, I was born and raised in warm climates, so this is hilarious to see. Yeah, 40 is warm when compared to 20 degrees…but we gotta be real, it’s still not shorts weather. What happens when we hit 50 degrees? Oh man…that’s when girls in tank tops come out. When I talk to my mother in Florida and it’s 50 degrees down there, she turns the heat on in the house and puts on her “winter” coat. If it gets to 60 degrees here, people start sunbathing.

So, my point is that no one appreciates the change in seasons quite like Bostonians. We go a little nuts. The changes are so drastic that it’s hard to transition from one climate change to the other. Why, just a couple of weeks ago, I was sitting here in my office which is a converted sun room and had to do a double take. It had thunderstormed that morning, then the window on my left had bright sun streaming down and the window on my right was pouring rain. A literal example of the well-known phrase…”If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a minute.”

If you’re unlucky like me and don’t get to spend your summers on the Cape, (my *ahem* summer house in Chatham is being renovated [aka being put on stilts]), then suffering the summer in the city isn’t so bad. Yeah right…too bad I don’t have enough money to put gas in my private jet right now either. But I digress. Seriously, nothing wiles away the summer months like that good ol’ pastime of barbecuing. I just had my first one of the season last weekend, so let me share with you a fun little tip.

Mini-burgers are so hot right now. Ruby Tuesday’s got em. Match which is a trendy little restaurant lounge in Boston’s Back Bay has built their whole menu around the mini-burger (with a side of martinis). However, I was able to recreate the magic right in my own backyard. My friends were totally amazed with the teeny weeny burgers and asked how I got hamburger buns so small. The trick is to use plain ol’ dinner rolls! Yup, that easy. The hard part though is making the hamburger patties yourself since all the ready made ones are standard size. Benefiting from my experience, 6 pounds of ground beef makes approximately 60 patties if you make them dinner roll size. So, be prepared to play patty cake for a while. However, the comments you get from your friends is definitely worth the trouble! So have at it and happy grilling!

Boston Rocks!

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Boston is without a doubt the intellectual, technological and cultural center of New England. Despite residents sometimes being too cerebral or unfriendly, this is still a great city to live, work and play in. Guess that’s why I stuck around for 15 years. Please enjoy my opinions, observations, rants and raves about my adopted hometown.

About Boston, MA

Boston is without a doubt the intellectual, technological and cultural center of New England. Despite the reputation for having crazy drivers, unfriendly citizens and harsh weather conditions, this is still a great city to live, work and play in. Check in daily to get this resident's take on fun things to do, great places to eat and general interesting news about ol' Beantown.
